Baristas at coffee houses, restaurants and bars will often treat customers to their own brand of coffee art.

This commonly comes in the form of a heart, a fern, a swan or even a cat. Coffee lovers are known to share these designs with friends or on social media.

Curated coffee art

Recently, the work of a local bar in Langebaan, Western Cape has set the socials abuzz by serving their customers a unique form of coffee art.

Patrons at Wunderbar are now given ‘coffee portraits’, after the establishment introduced a special coffee printer that is capable of pressing life-like portraits into a customer’s flat white.

The idea stemmed from the bar owners wanting to add something quirky and memorable to the overall customer experience.

“At Wunderbar, we delight our customers by printing pictures of their pets, loved ones, and even themselves on their coffee,” said Wunderbar’s Esti and Liesa.

“This extra brings so much excitement to our clients’ coffee experience.”

Patrons are not charged for the extra artwork and the printer has allowed Wunderbar to add their dash of brilliance without letting the coffee get cold.

“At Wunderbar, we love to be different, and we love to spoil and surprise our clients,” Esti added. “It’s like adding a personal touch from our family to yours.”

German coffee giant buys majority stake in famous SA roastery

In other coffee news, a German coffee consortium has acquired a majority shareholding in a 30-year-old South African roastery, as reported by The South African website.

Caturra Roastery, based in Cape Town, has sold a majority stake of their business to German coffee company Melitta for an undisclosed amount.

Caturra Africa has decades of experience as master roasters, while also selling machines and non-coffee products (such as water and tea) to retail and hospitality channels.

The beverage company was founded by Annette Becker and Ryan Palos in 1994. Their coffee has won multiple gold star awards at the London Great Taste Awards.

Following on from significant success in Southern Africa, Caturra has a full export department that has seen its coffee travel deeper into Africa and abroad.

A coffee legacy

Melitta, a family-owned company, was founded in 1908 by Melitta Bentz and has its headquarters in Minden, Germany. Bentz is credited with inventing the first paper coffee filter.

Since its founding the group has expanded globally and sells coffee products, machines and filters.

Their European coffee division will oversee Caturra.
